Frances and Roy have both been left behind in society s race to happiness and contentment. They each have a son: Daniel, by Frances fling with a married man, and Stephen, whose * mother ran off and left him with Roy. Both of them are beyond the first flush of youth, but their relationship is loving and mature, and Roy anticipates no difficulties with the ready-made family. It is Frances whose composure is threatened, by the reactions of outsiders to the marriage, and by recollections of a past that is not as buried as she had supposed. Gradually she begins to doubt herself and her capacity for love, to a point of crisis for the marriage and the whole family. This is a touching and sensitively drawn portrayal of the endeavour by two people to make a new start for themselves and their children, written by an author most praised for her delicate descriptions of the interplay of love and external influence.
