He had the gun in his hand. He had seemed to pat his breast with a quick hand, and then he was holding the gun, black and alive with menace, supple and at home in his practiced confident fingers. She heard voices confused and mingled in disharmony, unidentifiable shocked and then Mackey was speaking harshly but with confidence, almost with joy, as though his voice had some innate price of it's own.
