Eleanor Jefferson is not sure whether she is a widow or a deserted wife, and so cannot safely remarry. And she enjoys the company of local businessman Grant Appleton, but he and her young son, Phillip, seem unable to get along. While Eleanor vacillates between security and hope, Phillip makes friends with a mysterious stranger.
