Pumpkin Festival has Arrived in Middlebridge, Wisconsin but so has the Man in Black.
The smell of spicy warm cider, the taste of pumpkin pie, corn mazes, carnivals, and autumn decorations -- they’re all part of Middlebridge’s Pumpkin Festival. Having a full week’s vacation from teaching her second-graders, the cozy-crafting amateur sleuth Jennifer Hunter is ready to jump into the fall festivities like they’re a fresh pile of raked leaves. That’s before her loathed enemy, Ronin Wise, enters the picture and rots her plans faster than a pumpkin in a creek. And, he’s not going anywhere.
There’s a thief in town -- the Man in Black -- who steals the Wise family’s pumpkin jewel. Ronin and his uncle hire Jennifer, her dad, and her best friend, Jake Hollow, to solve the mysterious disappearance of this orange diamond, and with every moment they don’t solve the case, Jennifer has to endure the ornery antics of Ronin. That’s why she immediately hops on the Man in Black’s trail, but he’s got his eye on Jennifer as well. Literally. Every time she turns around the Man in Black is spying on her like a love-struck ghost, which is maybe why he keeps slipping through her fingers whenever she tries to catch him.
Following the clues of the case, Jennifer gets swept up in carnival craziness and hauntings that leave her breathless, only to find that the further she investigates the crime, the deeper she dives into Ronin’s life. Their pasts are interweaving in a way Jennifer never imagined, and the more she discovers about him, the more she learns about the secrets in her own family. There are skeletons in everyone’s closets, and they’re all coming out for the Halloween season.
The question is: can Jennifer deal with the spy and the new spices in her life? Can she save Middlebridge’s beloved pumpkin jewel, capture the Man in Black, salvage her relationships, and enjoy the splendor of the fall season? It’s up to her to ensure the town lives apple-y ever after, but she’s worried that the Man in Black has already rotted their fall season to the core.
