Kenneth Von Gunden was a Penn State University professor and is still a writer. Many of his friends call him "Dr. Kenny," because he has a Ph.D. in American Culture/Film/Popular Culture from Penn State.
Von Gunden was born in Bellefonte PA (Jonathan Frakes of ST:TNG was also born there). Bellefonte, with its "Big Spring" was the fictional "Hostigos" in H. Beam Piper's novel Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen.
He discovered SF at the local library when he was about twelve years old, beginning with those big Groff Conklin anthologies and graduating to Robert A. Heinlein juveniles. Hooked, he went on to read every SF book in the library.
As a graduate student at PSU, Von Gunden assisted Philip Klass (William Tenn) in teaching one of the first SF Literature courses in the United States. It was Klass who encouraged him to write.
