Rachel Calthorpe, forced to flee her home in Botany Bay in 1890 after witnessing a tragedy involving an aborigine girl and four local white men, leaves her family veiled in disgrace. Daisy Entwistle, born 32 years after her grandmother Rachel's death, shares more with her ancestor than just looks: both are sensitive, adventurous females with strong principles. Daisy - youngest daughter of aloof, preoccupied Violet and William - becomes obsessed with her grandmother, who drowned in remote waters off Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia.
