A human sixer
"Wally, this is stupid."
My friend regarded me through his long bangs. "You didn't say that when I told the class yesterday, Carol."
"Yes, I did," I protested. "You just weren't listening. I told you it was a crazy idea. Call it off, Wally."
He shook his head. "I can't. Everybody's waiting in the gym. I can't back out now."
"What if you land your BMX on one of the kids?" I asked.
He grinned. "Gee, Carol, you're so funny. I really like it when you joke around."
I rolled my eyes. "I'm not joking, Wall. What's going to happen if you drop your bike on some kid's face?"
At that he looked serious. "I'd never do that. If I thought I was going to do that, I'd never even try the jump."
"You could be wrong!"
"You don't really think that, do you?"
"No, I know you can do it," I snapped. "It's not the jump I'm afraid of, it's getting caught. What if Mr. Nightingale walks into the gym? He'll suspend you for sure."
"No way," Wally disagreed.
"He'd probably have no choice. What would you do if you were the assistant principal and you found some kid jumping his BMX over six other kids in the school gym?"
Wally scratched his head and pondered for a moment. "Oh well," he reasoned, "it can't be helped. I've got to do it."
I sighed and glanced around the cafeteria. There was almost no grade sevens left. They had all slipped quietly into the gym. It looked so obvious - the place was half empty! If Mr. Nightingale walked in, he'd know for sure that something was up. Wally would get royal heck.
