This novel is the witty chronicle of an unusual Croatian family in the period from 1951 until 1992. For decades, the family has been under a strange curse which leads to all the male members of the family literally breaking a leg when they meet the love of their lives. The story is told in a leisurely style with description of a host of small episodes which link the family into a close unit. The characters who move in and out of the pages are very likeable. Joy of life oozes from every page. This is a book both for the casual reader and for literary connoisseurs. "How we broke our legs" has gone through six editions in the Croatian language and was translated and published in English and Chinese.
The Critics:
The story in the novel How we broke our legs is told in a light tone, revivin memories of events from family life with a fine dose of humor, which enfolds the people, the times and the experiences in a charming aura which brings it all close and recognisable.

Gavran's How we broke our legs successfully continues along the prose path he has marked out of his work... At a time when readers here yearn for a good story, and library shelves seem to be offering low quality, even weak post-moderm books, Gavran's infectiously witty text stand out almost as the exotic.
Zoran Maljkovi
A coupling of semantic sections implemented in functional, coherent sentences which result in a clear articulation, shine with full brilliance in his novel.
