Special Agent

(1976)
A novel by

A rookie FBI agent manning the Winthrop, Connecticut headquarters late at night receives a mysterious tip to watch out for a man named Hernandos Gomez.

The next day another agent discovers that six cars have been stolen from the Winthrop area in the last 24 hours.

As Special Agents Sid Benjamin and Linda Bartlett lead the investigation into the stolen cars, an Hispanic woman connected to Hernandos Gonzalez is brutally murdered in a Winthrop slum.

A blond who just happens to have been on friendly terms with Hernandos Gomez also turns up in an exclusive suburb, where she steadfastly refuses to answer all questions.

At the end of the trail - cocaine.

Increasingly frustrated by their lack of progress in finding Gonzales, an unlikely source emerges who could be crucial to the capture of the criminals.

'Special Agent', by novelist Noel Gerson, should go a long way in answering the questions raised about the FBI.

What manner of organization is the FBI?

Is it a group of zealous law-and-order vigilantes ready to listen to a conversation at the drop of a hat or burgle an office in quest of evidence?

Or, contrarily, is it the most diligent, expert, and honest group of officers in any law-enforcement agency anywhere in the world?

Although 'Special Agent' is a novel, its attention to detail, description of FBI procedure, and adherence to the way things really are in the bureaus will provide the reader with a fascinating look into how the FBI works, as well as why it does certain things.
