The Great Belzoni and the Gait of Anubis
(2006)The Unknown Adventures of the Great Belzoni Book 1
A Story by W D Gagliani
Regarding GB
Giovanni Battista Belzoni was an Italian circus strongman who became one of the earliest European antiquities procurers. He was one of the first Europeans to enter the Great Pyramid. He was also one of the first of the so-called "grave robbers" to take copious notes and expand the day's knowledge of ancient Egyptian culture and burial practices. He was a fearless giant of a man, a dreamer, and an adventurer in the old-fashioned sense. Rumor has it the character of Indiana Jones was based partly on Belzoni. I decided he needed a "chronicler" in the Sherlock Holmes vein and a new set of supernatural adventures fit for an explorer of his caliber. The result is "The Great Belzoni and the Gait of Anubis," a story the title of which also pays tribute to one of my favorite writers, Tim Powers, and his classic fantasy novel, The Anubis Gates. Included after the novella is the short-short "The Great Belzoni and the Monster of Goa," taken from the anthology Small Bites. As they say at the end of the Bond movies, "Belzoni will return."
