It is a run of the mill, if somewhat frustrating Tuesday morning in the life of Chartered Surveyor Scott Reid, as he collects a set of keys from an Estate Agent in order to inspect yet another property. All he is concerned about is ticking another house from the long list he is due to inspect that day, but when he finds the home owner lying dead in his bed, the apparent victim of a brutal stabbing, his day suffers a sudden injection of excitement that is the last thing he needs.
Detective Inspector Jim Aitken's day begins in a similarly uneventful way. Having recently returned from parental leave, he is immediately handed the case. He has a murder victim with close links to several well-known faces in Scottish society, in addition to close ties to a notorious figure in organised crime, as well as a complicated love-life. There's just one problem, although he has a body, there is no signed of any forced entry to the house. All doors and windows are locked and as the case progresses, he learns that his victim led a life that throws up no shortage of suspects or motives for his killing.
