Another anatomy of a murder, rape, underpants and all, in the South when three years after the fact, Daisy Canfield's case is revived for personal reasons -- when the young man once suspected comes back to town, and when Danny Rush, Chief of Police, in debt and out a wife and his youngsters, tries to use the case as a means of re-establishing his manhood. It is further fortified when another young woman, Paula, drifts into his life and props him up with martinis, sex and incentive. Before very long Danny is sure he knows who the killer is (Wallace Gordon, a local man with an art gallery) but he is unable to prove it or himself particularly after Paula runs out of town with Gordon. . . . You'll read it for the story if at all -- it's a question of appetite rather than taste.
