Sue Delamere travels to the small African state of Zambelia to begin a new life lecturing in English literature. Always a trouble spot, now that its aged and ailing dictator has let power pass to his unscrupulous mistress, Big Mama, Zambelia has fallen apart.
When Sue's first lecture brings her to the attention of the security forces, led by Big Mama's sadistic nephew, she flees the capital and finds herself with the last free remnants of the opposition. Along with her colleagues, they set out to tell the world the truth about the torture and human rights abuse that is rife and a government-sanctioned trade in human organs.
As the country descends into chaos, it is Sue and her friends who take on the fight for prosperity, democracy and freedom.
