Robert pays a visit to James, who managed to land his first theatre role at the Witch Festival in Knipton. The festival, commemorating the witch trial of Joan Flower in the 17th century, doesn't sit well with everyone: Claire Richmond, the archivist of Belvoir Castle, condemns the spectacle and advocates for the rehabilitation of the women executed as witches. However, in the village, she is also considered a witch. When a series of burglaries and murders occur, the suspect is quickly identified: it must be the new witch of Belvoir. Robert, along with his nephew, begins the investigation.
