Though he’ll always miss the Rockies, mountain man Cody Dakota happily settles into his new California home, a rundown miner’s cabin in Grizzly Flats. Nestled amid the Sierra Nevadas, Grizzly Flats offers wilderness to roam and plenty of game to hunt, plus farms and small towns within a few days’ ride where Cody can buy or barter for supplies as needed. It’s also not far from the J&C Winery, run by Cody’s partner, Joseph Sutter. Joseph has a good head for business, but occasionally problems arise that require Cody’s special brand of action.
Fixing up his homestead and exploring his domain keep Cody plenty busy, but he’s used to the risks of a mountain man’s existence. Then a violent assault in the frozen wilderness leaves him responsible for two children, Jake and Emily.
Surviving the winter will be tough enough. But the outlaw who killed the children’s parents is still around, hunting the sole witnesses to his crime. Cody must act to protect them, whatever the cost.
