England 1940: Seven year old Ellie and her nine year old brother are evacuated from bomb-torn London to safety in the countryside at the home of a distant relative. Uncle Art lives in a primitive cottage by the sea in rural Dorset. He has a beard, a wooden leg, a spyglass and a talking parrot. In the minds of the frightened children it is obvious that Uncle Art is a pirate. Peter, reliving Treasure Island, fears that he will be press-ganged and sent away to sea, and Ellie, who has never been away from her mother, fears everything from the rats in the privy to the idea of washing her own hair.
Although Christmas is only a few days away, the childrens mother cannot stay. Before she leaves, Ellie ask her mother if Father Christmas will still be able to find them. Her mother replies that Father Christmas will not even be looking for them, because it will not be safe for him to fly when the bombs are dropping. It seems that this will be a year without Christmas.
Based on a true story, and told with dry but heartwarming humor, The Christmas Feather is an ideal story for sharing with everyone from the Greatest Generation to General Alpha (and perhaps the newest generation we are now calling Generation Covid.)
Genre: General Fiction
