Miss Caroline Forbes receives an invitation from a Duke that will change her life.
After receiving an invitation from the Duke of Wentworth to stay at his sprawling estate with her chaperone, Miss Caroline Forbes, travels by train to Eastbourne. Miss Forbes encounters a rather rude and patronizing woman on the train. After a brief incident, Miss Forbes quickly retaliates using harsh words as she had been taught to do so by her father, the Viscount Canterbury.
After arriving at the duke’s estate, she realizes in utter horror that the woman on the train will be joining her and the duke at his estate for the visit. The duke’s mother, the Dowager Duchess, tries to rid her son of Miss Forbes who has, according to her, little respect for lineage and entitlement.
Will Miss Forbes fall victim to the vindictive Dowager Duchess who plots against her, or will the duke see right through the veil of revenge that his mother had hung? Will the duke choose Miss Forbes against the advice of his mother? Will Miss Forbes sour to the duke because of his mother’s insulting activities?

Eliza Heaton has outdone herself with this sweet romance that is well-written, filled it with a magnificent cast of characters, with witty dialogue. Her characters come to life as you find yourself drawn into their story with all the insecurities and misunderstandings they both face.
