Rumors of a winter campaign against Sitting Bull spread through the ranks. But who would do it? Custer and his 7th Regiment seemed the obvious choice. For Custer and his men, it was a chance to make history. For the Sioux nation, it was the final chapter in an old familiar story. The red man was being pushed off his land. But this time, there was nowhere for the Sioux to go. They either had to fight back or exist as captives on the reservation. And so the tribes gathered in the Black Hills near the Little Big Horn to face the soldiers under Custer. This would be the Indians' last great battle for freedom.
