Fergusson Wright Hume also referred to as Fergus Hume, was an ingenious writer. He was born in England. His father was James Hume. When he was at the age of 3, the family moved to Dunedin, New Zealand, where he studied at Otago Boys' High School and took up law at the University of Otago. He passed the New Zealand bar examinations in 1885. Right after finishing his studies, Fergusson emigrated to Melbourne, Australia, where he became a barristers' clerk. He started drafting dramas, but realized that it was hard to convince the managers of Melbourne playhouses to assent or even to peruse them.

Getting hold of the books of Emile Gaboriau were before most famous in Melbourne, he acquired and browse a collection of them and ascertained to compose a writing of the same style. He then wrote The Mystery of a Hansom Cab, situated in Melbourne, with portrayals of scanty city life from his experience of Little Bourke Street. He published his own novel and became very successful. Since he offered the British and American rights for 50 pounds, conversely, he won few of the possible monetary benefit. It was one of the best sellers of the Victorian era.
