Gr 6 Up Nine excellent and spooky stories by such authors as Dorothy L Sayers, Ray Bradbury, Aidan Chambers, and Joan Aiken are brought together in yet another successful anthology. The first few ghostly stories are contemporary and will be easily understood by middle grade and older children. Some of the macabre tales in the latter half of the volume, however, are either very British in language and tone or are somewhat obscure. The content and some middle-aged characters render them more suitable for older high-school or college students and for adults. More than one story might be appropriate for learning to tell aloud, perhaps with subtle abridgments. Overall, this is a quality compilation of stories in the popular horror genre, but as the individual stories will appeal to very different audiences, the book's readership may be limited. Leslie Chamberlin, Napa City-County Library, Calif.
