JOHN SPENCER HILL was born in Brantford, Ontario. He obtained his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, and his Ph.D from the University of Toronto. He is currently a professor of English at the University of Ottawa. He is married with three children.
