Housman's book cover designs were highly commended by contemporary reviewers. In describing this one for the first edition of his own poems, he noted years later, 'I was just then designing book covers for John Lane, so naturally I did what I thought an extra-good one for myself. It was, in all events, very rich and elaborate.'
