Letters From Havana

(2020)
A Story by

After I wrote HAVANA LOST in 2012, I thought I was done with Cuba. I wasn't. A few years later, I wrote a story set just before the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 about two brothers who correspond by letter. One brother is a recent US immigrant, but the other is still in Cuba with their parents. They are on the verge of escaping to the US when the brother, a waiter at the Hotel Nacionale in Havana, serves some military officers and overhears suspicious talk about Soviet rockets in Cuba. He writes his brother about it, and soon both brothers' lives are upended and irrevocably changed. This story won Honorable Mention in The Saturday Evening Post 2014 Fiction Contest and was published in Best Short Stories from The Saturday Evening Post Great American Fiction Contest, 2015.
