Megan finished with her boyfriend, Luke, months ago and is looking forward to the exams being over, going on holiday with her best friend, and freedom. However, in an instant all this changes. In a Personal Development lesson her teacher tells the class: "Of course, it is possible to be pregnant and still have periods." In this moment Megan realises that this means that she could be pregnant--having only missed one period, and this months after she and Luke had done it, she had thought there was nothing to worry about. From the moment Megan realises she could indeed be pregnant, her emotions spiral out of control--how will her friends react? What will happen to her school work, her exams? And, worst of all, what will her mother say?
Mary Hooper treats the difficult subject of teenage pregnancy with sympathy and compassion. For someone who finds herself in the same situation as Megan, the novel is supportive, informative and encouraging in that it calmly portrays the options available, the involvement of the social services and the help available to a teenage mother. However, it in no way glamorises the reality of under-age sex and pregnancy. Megan is a cautionary tale to all teenagers, showing how easy it is for a girl to get pregnant and the consequences for the rest of that girl's life and the difficult decisions she will have to make. (Ages 12 and up)
Genre: Young Adult Fiction
