Those who live in the isolated village of Mountainknee bond with the dragon mothers who lay their eggs in the caves on the cliffs above. Children hunt game and ghosts for their dragon bondmothers, and the dragons share some of their strength and spirit with the children. One day twelve-year-old Elexa is hunting gems when the shadow of a rogue human-hunting dragon flashes over the ground. Elexa and her friend raise the alarm, and the villagers go into hiding. Dragons, ghosts, and humans work out what happens next. A 21,000 word novella originally published in Sharyn November's FIREBIRDS RISING (Viking, 2009).
