In the years following World War II, Claire works as a dancer. When she is badly injured in an air crash she is told that she will never dance again. While convalescing in the country, she meets Giles Mallard, the recluse who owns the nearby great house; he has been injured during the war and is now an epileptic. They marry, but Claire finds new problems in her life with Giles and with the woman whom at one time he had intended to marry.
