A novel by

Emily Gordon is a young and ambitious editor at an independent publisher based in London's Berkley Square. When esteemed novelist Hugh Morton dies, the firm is asked by his aged widow Jacqueline to commission an authorized biography, and Emily is despatched to the Morton's lovely house in a lonely part of Suffolk to meet Jacqueline and the biographer, Joel Richards.
In 1949, 19-year-old Isabel Barber packs a suitcase and leaves her family's brick box house in Kent to take the train to London. There, while staying with her eccentric aunt, she meets and falls in love with Hugh Morton, then an aspiring writer trying to produce his great work, and soon becomes pregnant with his child.
On a stormy night in 1953, the Suffolk and Essex coasts are overwhelmed by floods that leave hundreds of people dead or missing and Isabel's life changes forever. But what really happened that night has been kept hidden, until in the present day Emily starts to receive anonymous packages and she realizes that all is not as it seems...
