Max Reeves and his loyal horse, Blacky, ain’t looking for much, just a place to lay low. Somewhere where folks don’t know their names and the past can be forgotten. So, they head east, crossing the mighty Mississippi, where the hills of Kentucky roll like heaven on earth. But peace is hard to come by when there’s evil lurking around every bend.
The discovery of an old timer shot full of lead was a stark reminder that some things never change. Seems that he’s stepped into a hornet’s nest. Here, in the coal-rich mountains, feuds ran as deep as the veins of black gold beneath the earth, and crooked men like the Justice of the Peace would do anything to claim it.
With the Railroad looming and the Marshal service on one side and the Pinkertons on the other, both closing in, Max finds himself in the crosshairs of a battle he never asked for.
But Max has his own code—innocents come first. In a land where law and justice are blurred, he may have to be all three: Judge, Jury, and Executioner.
Trouble may follow him, but it don’t scare him none.
