After their adventures described in "The Moon in the Cloud" and "The Shadow on the Sun", Reuben and Thamar have become prince and princess of Canaan. Amidst their happiness is one sorrow - their son, Sadhi who is deaf and dumb. There is trouble when he is sent back to Kemi at a time of upheaval.
