Simeon Grist Mysteries Box Set Books 4-6
(2016)(A book in the Simeon Grist series)
An omnibus of novels by Timothy Hallinan
Readers of Timothy Hallinan's two current series, the award-winningJunior Bender Mysteries and the Poke Rafferty Bangkok Thrillers, may not be familiar with his first series, written between 1989 and 1995.
Simeon Grist is a semi-slacker with an old cabin in Topanga Canyon, a string of useless college degrees and no sense of the direction he wants his life to take. He becomes a private eye after he solves, almost accidentally, the murder of a UCLA coed, and - much to his surprise - discovers that he likes the work.
This box set contains the fourth, fifth, and sixth Grist novels, all of which got excellent reviews. Readers who open them will find themselves in a time capsule of life in post-Hippie Los Angeles, the world of floppy disks and phone booths, where the word "google" was not yet a verb and the Millennium loomed near.
Buyers of this set will save about half what it would cost them to get them individually. So head on up into the somewhat stoney wilds of Topanga and see why these books have been cult favorites for two decades.
Editorial Reviews:
"High-octane action, baroque violence, humor and pathos in a self-assured manner that mark Mr. Hallinan as a capable new practitioner of the private eye tale." The Wall Street Journal
"Grist is a modern-day successor to Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe." -- New York Newsday
"Terrific, well-crafted, thoroughly satisfying . . . updates Raymond Chandler's vision of life in Los Angeles through Grist's sardonic, often hilarious observations." Los Angeles Herald-Tribune
"Hallinan's prose sparkles. His novels, like Chandler's, are entertaining and occasionally disturbing fantasies." The Virginia Pilot and Ledger-Star
"It's rare to find a first novel in the mystery genre that boasts a smoothly plotted story, crisp dialogue, and excellent characterizations . . . This exciting tale accomplishes all three . . . The book never falters, sustaining suspense and interest throughout . . . a sure winner." Booklist
"Hallinan has a genuine ability to write effective prose, engaging repartee, sharp and witty characterizations . . . could become a notable series." The Washington Post Book World
