The Last Human
(1992)(The third book in the Chronicles of the King's Tramp series)
A novel by Tom de Haven
BookList - Roland Green
De Haven concludes his almost aggressively literary fantasy trilogy, "Chronicles of the King's Tramp", with the story of a duel between Jack, one of the Walkers, and the Last Human, the lethal Queen of Noise whose shrieks threaten chaos. Most of the ingenious characters from earlier volumes are still around, but more tangentially than many readers will enjoy. The land of Lostwithal, however, is as intelligently drawn as ever. Although no place to start the trilogy, nor indeed to make one's acquaintance with De Haven's particular brand of fantasy, "The Last Human" has little in it to disappoint and much to reward faithful "Chronicles" followers, so that collections patronized by such readers should round out the trilogy.
