John Plowden is a young solicitor with a modest dream - a house of his own in quiet suburbia, where he can engage in undisturbed study of his beloved Classics. A gamble on the stock market enables him to purchase No. 20 Walden Road. But all is not well and soon, Plowden becomes convinced that his neighbour Mr. Woodfell has succeeded in calling up creatures from the abyss in the back garden of No. 19. But just what is the ultimate end of Woodfell's forbidden rites? And will Plowden succeed in protecting Woodfell's niece from the diabolical forces gathering next door?
