"The Tractate Middoth" is a ghost story by the British author M R James which was first published in 1911 in More Ghost Stories. An adventure story and romance too, the tale revolves around the second will of a Dr Rant, which has gone missing. Thirty years after his death, Mr Garrett, a librarian, searches for a Mishnaic tractate for a library patron called John Eldred. Garrett encounters a black-clad clergyman who also seems interested in the book, and shortly therafter meets a Mrs Simpson who is the beneficiary of the missing will. Then the book disappears from the library and high adventure follows....
