Those who've read Awna of the Wolves know that Derwain is a justice worker (and sometime assassin) enforcing the laws of the city of Tralles. Don't strain your memory. No other characters from the former book show up during Derwain's sojourn in the Aist or his visit to Shillaway. Tralles has just fought a war contrived by Earth souls equipped with an oracle device, one of eight known on Paeon, seeded from Earth three thousand years ago, nine thousand by Paeonese measure. Derwain is a war hero, and in Tralles that counts a lot. The electors of Tralles are keen to collect as many oracle devices as they can.
Derwain carries on a correspondence with the equally admired Awna, the woman he's come to love.
The politics of Aist, the economy, even clothing styles and music, are unlike those of Tralles. The citizens of Aist don't know why they're poor and Tralles is rich. Economics is just one of the sciences no one has mastered, thanks to the fact that Seedship Anna Lepavic has long been silent.
The religion of the Double Gods is spread across known and unknown regions, but zeal varies from place to place. In times past the language of the seedships was taught to the animal-born humans of Paeon, not entirely replacing their parleys. You'll likely understand Proper. It's book-English, folding in three centuries and a dozen dialects. It's a bit retro, truth be told.
Genre: Science Fiction
