The air might be thin at 8,000 feet, but even there, at the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, Annette Young has enough energy for two people. Hopping down from the chairlift, she grabs the first person she comes to; her brother Paul, to help hook up the snowmaking machines that will run through the night until mother nature provides the snow they need to stay in business.
Since she could walk, Annette's life revolved around the ski resort her grandfather had started long before she was born. But with the recent death of their father, brother and sister had plugged along, working at getting it right, opening day in their sights at all times.
Too busy to even think of romance, Annette has only one goal, and that is to make sure the success of Sugarloaf Mountain continues. But it's too much work for Annette and Paul and their faithful skeleton staff. They would have to bite the bullet and hire someone new.
Christopher Santos spent every winter since he was thirteen, doing seasonal work on the slopes in Big Bear. After an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps in November, his first thoughts went to the unused skis stored in his mother's garage in Yucaipa at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains. But work had to come before play and he needed to find a job, fast. His mother had the perfect solution, waving one of those small advertising papers in his face.
