First published in 1943, this is the last in Koestler's trilogy on ends and means. The central theme of conflict between morality and expediency is worked out in terms of individual psychology. Slavek starts out as a brave young revolutionary. On the analyst's couch after a breakdown, he discovers his crusading zeal came from unconscious guilt.
