On September 23, 1926, an Austrian experimental biologist named Dr. Paul Kammerer committed suicide. Arthur Koestler knew about Dr. Kammerer's work when he was himself a student in Vienna, and has always been interested in his tragic story. The suicide itself came as the climax to a great evolutionary controversy which Kammerer's experiments had aroused. This is the story of that evolutionary controversy.
