Born to a great Lancastrian inheritance, Margaret Beaufort was married at an early age to Edmund Tudor, half-brother of Henry VI. Margaret's son, Henry, was born two months after his father's death, so she reared him in Wales under the care of Jasper, Earl of Pembroke, brother to Edmund. Love blossomed between Margaret and Jasper, but the union was forbidden by the Law of the Church.
