Suffering from a terminal heart condition, the penniless John Fergus is concerned for his family's welfare. How will his wife and daughter earn their living after his imminent death? His saviour appears to come in the shape of an old old schoolfriend, the rich businessman Sir Everard Oakes, who offers to settle a fortune on Fergus's family. But there is a terrible price to pay. For in return for his help, Fergus will be required to help Oakes to get rid of notorious blackmailer, Samuel Randall - by murdering him in cold blood.
