EDITORIAL REVIEWS
In media res--Dawn drops you right in the middle of a charge up a remote mountain in this one. And I didn't quite get why, except, yeah, that's how to really introduce Jessie and Landon. But then I reached the end, where it 'dawned' on me. It's mirrored in the chess game, too: the master manipulator controlling smaller players. What a chilling crime system and scheme, one where the financial beneficiary has no direct link to culpability, yet still feeds his own desires. This book is both disturbing and timely, in sync with crimes hitting national news. What's worse, it could happen. —L. L. Alexandeer, freelance editor
Okay. This one was scary. And exciting, too, but I think twice about walking down to the convenience store at night now, and I look twice at every guy I see, wondering if they're a weirdo. —Kimberly Clarke, reader of K-9 mysteries
Landon and Jessie come through over and over again. Wow. I hope that there really are cops like this where I live. Really. —Sarah Yarborough, mystery reader
The crimes and the connections between them are intricate and intriguing. What stood out for me was Jessie's willingness to fight her way through her own issues and to never give up, no matter what when faced with overwhelming odds against her. I love strong women who don't quit! —Joanne Robinson, mystery lover
The depth of this book and how clean it was when I received it as a beta reader even before the editing team did their thing was amazing. I beta read a lot, mostly after the final edits. Because Dawn sent this one out to all of us and gave us a deadline, I thought it was going to be a mess. It wasn't. Clean, clean, clean. High praise to an excellent author. —Mark Peterson, crime and mystery reader
The dogs. It's the dogs. They always save the day. I have to say, I've given up trying to figure out the answer and just read because I've flunked guessing every time. This time, I did get it right, but the how was still unexpected. I learned a lot, too, especially about the cruel damage that child abuse can do to a person. Poor Landon. Jessie? She's great! I'd love to be her. —Fern Simson, K-9 Mystery Reader
