We came so close to getting together once on Valentine's Day.
Is he back to finish what we started?
Jack lived next door to me growing up and I'd always had a crush on him. I'd thought he was flirting with me and that the feeling was mutual. But everything was ruined between us one Valentine's Day. After he joined the military and left our hometown while I was still in Castle Falls High, I told myself to just forget about him forever.
But that's been a lot easier said than done! I've always hated Valentine's Day since then, although despite my best intentions to move on—and despite actually moving away for college—a big part of me has always held onto hope... and my virginity... for Jack.
This year I'm on a college break and staying with my parents to work on my thesis.
And to not celebrate Valentine's Day.
And to not stare at the house next door wishing that things had gone differently back in high school.
Of course I fail at this last goal, and I'm surprised when my snooping reveals that Jack is home in Castle Falls, too! He's back from the military and he seems happy to see me. He invites me over to catch up over a beer, which I half hope, half fear is code for finally sealing the deal.
I don't want a repeat of the Valentine's Day from Hell. But I do want to get lost in Jack's heavenly emerald eyes and see how much more chiseled his already-muscular chest has gotten with all that military training.
I'm so tempted to see if we can have a Valentine's Day do-over.
Has Cupid written us off or does he still have plans for us?
