Joanna Kavenna recommends
Owlish (2023)
Dorothy Tse
"Dorothy Tse is a magnificent historian of unreal places. Her sage and serious characters are cast adrift in realities that are neither sage nor serious at all - and possibly impossible. Her parallel worlds and paradoxes brilliantly illuminate our own reality, with all its fictions masquerading as facts (and vice versa). Boundlessly creative, richly philosophical - I loved this book."
The Western Wind (2018)
Samantha Harvey
"The Western Wind is an extraordinary, wise, wild and beautiful book a thrilling mystery story and a lyrical enquiry into ideas of certainty and belief. Surprising, richly imagined, gloriously strange the best kind of fiction."
The Unforgotten (2015)
Laura Powell
"An eerie and sorrowful tale, beautifully-told: a hugely impressive debut."
