Joseph Kertes recommends
The End and the Beginning (2024)
K J Holdom
"The End and the Beginning is a rare tale, beautifully told, of a chapter in history that had to wait its turn to be written. As German forces rolled over their presumed enemies, they rolled over their own people too, many of them innocent, many of them children. This is the story of a family shattered, never to be made whole again, either physically or emotionally. K. J. Holdom has given us a powerful - and today, especially contemporary, especially poignant - reminder that war has no victors. An extraordinary and brilliant achievement."
The Book of Sam (2020)
Rob Shapiro
"Rob Shapiro gives us a rich, fresh, honest, eloquent take on the age-old adventure archetype and makes us feel better for the experience, better about ourselves, better about the world. What an achievement that is. This is a brilliant YA debut."
The Boat Runner (2017)
Devin Murphy
"Poignant acts as a cautionary tale for our own times The young Dutch boy Jacob Koopman, together with his family, lives in the middle of a morality tale, in which doing the right thing is often obscured by the need to survive. Devin Murphy has given us a moving, powerful and important work."
