Narrator Charlotte Kent, observing procedures in Mercy General Hospital for a book on surviving a hospital stay, becomes embroiled in murder and mayhem after witnessing a pancuronium (a paralytic drug) death. The plot swiftly alternates between her attempts to clear a pregnant friend and visits to the bedside of an ''almost'' son recovering from back surgery, but soon focuses on suspicious multiple deaths . Breathless, chatty prose mirrors Charlotte's hasty rounds, her confrontations with police and villains, and the standard chase scene through hospital subbasement corridors. Hurried, then, but moderately infectious.-- REK
