Hrub has been used and abused for nearly the whole of his life. Ripped from his clan and pushed into battle for the amusement of more powerful goblinoids, he survives only to be jammed in a cage and sold as a slave for the amusement of humans in the Calradon Empire, one of the few nations in the world who still condone such practices. With a combination of nerves, cunning, and pure desperation, Hrub finds a measure of safety, only to have it immediately rent away by circumstances he couldn't have foreseen. Once again, he is forced to fight the tidal forces of fate to stay alive.
But a person cannot suffer so much unfairness without gaining a certain sympathy for those who endure the same. The nobles of Calradon have instigated a new measure to control those under their control, which may mean that any hope of escape will be forever taken away. Unwilling to let that lie, having himself so recently escaped, Hrub delves into a murky world of underworld missions, dark trades, and double-dealings in an effort to give those who might wish to escape some sort of hope. This pits him against a cabal of lords who will do anything to maintain their control and refuse to let any hint of rebellion from forming within the borders of their nation. Surrounding them are ruthless warriors and mercenaries, each hungry for their own share of the profits that spill out, and who are all too willing to kill anyone who gets in the way of those desires. Especially... a lone goblin who dares to rattle the cages.
