Travis and Helen Dunn are two of the best private detectives in the business. When not wisecracking, arguing or trying to conceive a child, they are highly efficient and extremely deadly. Often aided by Helen's Korean mother who is a police captain and her Cuban father who is a district attorney and sometimes by her slightly insane mobster brother, the crew makes a formidable foe and desirable friend.

When the biggest movie star in Hollywood, Chad West's three-year-old adopted daughter is kidnapped on an outing in Central Park, his lawyer hired Travis and Helen to deliver the ransom and retrieve the child. The exchange seems simple enough, ransom money for the child. Except that things go terrible wrong.

The exchange was to be made in a seedy motel off the highway but when the child isn't present, Travis and Helen immediately suspect fowl play. The child is being held in a private home in Westchester. Helen stays with the kidnapper while Travis drives to the house in Westchester where he discovers the child has been buried alive. At the motel, the kidnapper attempts to kill Helen and she is forced to kill him.

After the medic circus surrounding Chad West and his wife dies down and Travis and Helen are exonerated by the FBI, life should return to normal for them.

Only it doesn't. The kidnapper had a silent partner who is now not so silent. The partner feels cheated out of the ransom money and now demands the money from Helen and Travis or his next victims will be them. This sets into motion a deadly cat and mouse game of survival played out on the streets of New York.
