'A powerful novel, straddling both war and present day. Legat teaches us that the truth will eventually out.' Richard Foreman, author of Warsaw

1942, Nazi-occupied Poland.

Edek Kitzman was born to be a farmer but life changes when the Nazis occupy his country.

Edek joins the Resistance against the wishes of his older brother Bronek. He is treading a dangerous path. For every German soldier killed by the partisans, ten innocent villagers will lose their lives. But wholly submitting cannot be an option.

Szymon Kunic tries to be a good Jew. When his entire family are murdered by the Nazis, he wants to join the partisans to seek revenge, but Edek tells him this isn’t his war and not his country to defend. Kunic inhabits the forest, fighting his own war and avoiding capture.

Forty years later, a body dating back to WW2 is found in an unmarked grave at the back of the Kitzmans’ garden. Rumours abound in the village and fingers are pointed at the family.

Dorota Kitzman devotes herself to uncovering the identity of the corpse and clearing her family’s name. Her grandfather Bronek and his wife Sabine, who has just returned from Germany after years in exile, know something about the grave but neither is prepared to talk about it.

Dorota is determined to get to the truth, but the truth may be harder to live with than lies.

Although she writes in a wide range of genres,
Anna Legat is best known for her DI Gillian Marsh detective series and The Shires, her cosy murder mysteries. She lives near Bath.
