SYNOPSIS: "Set in 1895 New York. Eighteen-year-old Tracy has been poor, cold, and hungry for almost as long as she can remember. After the death of her mother, her Irish immigrant family was forced out of a productive life in a peaceful Connecticut factory town, into the dismal and seemingly hopeless impoverishment of New York's Lower East Side. Working as a shipgirl for six dollars a week. crammed into a tiny flat with her grandfather, father, two brothers, and two sisters, Tracy refuses to let poverty get the best of her. With the help from a distant relative, she begins to pull herself and her family out of the misery that surrounds them. But her past is not so easily left behind and she is drawn to a man from the slums whose family may drag him into the deepest horror and degradation imaginable."
