John Noland was enslaved before the conflicts began on the border of Kansas and Missouri, proceeding the Civil War. His owner, Francis Asbury Noland, loaned him to the Confederate Army, specifically to Capt. William Quantrill’s Raiders.

Frances was too much a coward to join the fight himself, so as did many of the rich, he sent someone in his place to appease the army. John took the surname Washington upon his escape south at the war’s end. Later the captain was heard to claim John was the best scout he ever had and kept him close for the duration of the war. He refused any replacement because John was the best.

Jed Coal was a regular soldier in the Confederate Army. In his initial days as a conscript, Capt. Quantrill saw him on the rifle range and snatched him up for his band of warriors. He wasn’t asked if he wished to join but was forced into the Raiders through no doing of his own. He proved to be the best rifle shot Quantrill had ever seen, and he immediately wanted him with his eighty soldiers.

When Jodi Goodnight’s father died and the bank repossessed her ranch in Waco, she was left without a home. Unfortunately, a rude man slapped her behind, and being the courageous woman she was, Jodi pulled her gun and slammed him across the face. He was disfigured for life. Unfortunately, he was the new town sheriff, and she, too, found herself on the run.

The constellations collided, the earth turned on its axis, and the three were thrown together for better or worse. Suddenly, old war buddies show up to help John elude murder charges, turning their world upside-down. Jesse and Frank James, along with the Younger brothers, became woven into the escape, and they all had to run for their lives.
