DI Gabriel Taverner is back. Following his move to North Yorkshire from the Met, after an initial shaky start, his colleagues have accepted him fully, despite initially thinking he was a posh Southerner. This was not helped by his smart dress, posh accent and addiction to Earl Grey tea.
He came to York so he could meet his birth mother, having been adopted as a baby, but hasn't managed this due to his heavy work load. He decides to finalise arrangements to meet her, just as he heads up the search for a missing toddler, Ruby O'Neill. As Ruby is fostered and the local authority going through care proceedings, it is somewhat surprising that she is vanished from her foster carers' home. It also means that there are a lot of suspects, birth family for a start.
When all leads fizzle out to nothing, Taverner is under great pressure to solve the case and additional staff are employed, including a forensic psychologist.
The race is on to find the missing toddler and the team must leave no stone unturned to solve the case. As the investigation unfolds, Gabriel finds that once again he has difficult personal and professional choices to make, especially when the culprits could be a great deal closer to home than anyone ever suspected
Taut, compelling with a great range of characters, this is another great read from Charlie De Luca..
